Little Black Dress Initiative

From October 23-27th, 2023 the Junior League of Owensboro will launch its 5th Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI) to raise awareness around the limits our community faces every day due to hygiene poverty.  Our members will wear one black dress/outfit for 5 consecutive days, which illustrates the crippling effects limited resources can have on quality of life.

The objectives of LBDI are to raise awareness of the difficulties facing those who are in need and have few resources; to understand how limited resources can affect daily life; and to raise funds in support of the mission of the Junior League of Owensboro. These funds will help us offer hygiene assistance and develop programs to help alleviate hygiene poverty, as well as continue to offer training and volunteer opportunities for our members, and to support the local organizations with whom we partner. Our mission is to advance women's leadership and combat hygiene poverty.

Last year’s LBDI Campaign helped the League partner with Stand Against Child Abuse to aid in raising awareness about child abuse in our community. Junior League of Owensboro’s LBDI has also partnered with New Beginnings, Oasis, and My Sister’s Keeper. In addition, JLO was able to make additional donations to Crossroads Shelter, Community Dental Clinic, as well as provide scholarships.

This year, our goal is to combat poverty and hygiene insecurity, so your support is incredibly critical to making this campaign a success! Your donation will help us continue our Free Laundry Days for those in the community who struggle with money and resources needed to keep their families’ clothes and linens clean. JLO offers four Laundry Days each year for the community. In partnership with local laundry mats, JLO provides residents with the funds and laundry supplies to clean their items, as well as healthy snacks and water, plus age appropriate children’s activities to keep kids entertained while they are waiting for their caregiver to complete their laundry. Funds raised will also allow us to partner with other organizations to raise funds, train hands-on volunteers, and help spread the word to assure JLO projects successfully meet community needs.

The week long LBDI campaign will culminate on Saturday, October 28th, at the JLO Free Laundry Day at Discount Laundry on Scherm Rd. And Jo’s in and Out Coin Laundry on 4th Street.

You can follow along with the LBDI on the Junior League of Owensboro’s Facebook page, or support the campaign with a donation here.
